Applying To Graduate

In order to graduate in a specific semester, you must apply for graduation through the University Registrar within the application deadline period.

Dean's Exceptions

September 2013 candidates may petition to participate in the NYU Commencement and Gallatin Graduation ceremonies in May 2013 if they meet the criteria below.

To participate in the ceremonies, students must submit the petition form no later than April 15, 2013. B.A. students should submit the Petition to March at Graduation for Undergraduate Students and M.A. students should submit the Petition to March at Graduation for Graduate Students.

BA Students

• Students have no more than 2 courses (8 units) remaining after the last day of the Spring 2013 semester.
• Students are registered for summer 2013 sessions by April 15, 2013, to fulfill their remaining units.
• Students have completed the colloquium by May 17, 2013.
  
• Students are in good standing with the university.
• Students have updated their expected date of graduation on Albert to September 2013.
• Students have met with the Senior Class Adviser to confirm plans for graduation.

MA Students

• In addition to submitting the form Petition to March at Graduation for Graduate Students, M.A. students who have not yet defended the thesis must submit a letter from the adviser confirming that the student will be prepared to defend the thesis before the September 2013 deadline. This letter should be submitted to Amy Spellacy, Administrative Director of the M.A. Program, no later than April 15, 2013.
• The defense must be scheduled to occur before the September 2013 defense deadline (please see the calendar of thesis defense deadlines for more information).
• Students also must update their expected date of graduation on Albert to September 2013.

Candidates who will not complete their degree requirements by the September 2013 deadline set by the Office of the Registrar, may not petition to attend the May 2013 ceremonies. They will be invited to march in the May 2014 ceremonies.
