Applying To Graduate

In order to graduate in a specific semester, you must apply for graduation through the University Registrar within the application deadline period.

Dean's Exceptions

September 2017 candidates may petition to participate in the NYU Commencement and Gallatin Graduation ceremonies in May 2017 if they meet the criteria below.

To participate in the ceremonies, students must submit the petition form no later than April 15, 2017. BA students should submit the Petition to March at Graduation for Undergraduate Students and MA students should submit the Petition to March at Graduation for Graduate Students.

BA Students

BA Petitions will be granted if the following criteria are met:

  • Students have no more than 2 courses (8 units) remaining after the last day of the Spring 2017 semester.
  • Students are registered for summer 2017 sessions by April 15, 2017, to fulfill their remaining units
  • Students have completed, or have registered to complete, the colloquium by May 12, 2017.
  • Students are in good standing with the University.
  • Students have updated their expected date of graduation on Albert to September 2017.
  • Students have met with the Director of Student Affairs to confirm plans for graduation.

MA Students

MA Petitions will be granted if the following criteria are met:

  • Student has completed and submitted the Petition to March at Graduation form.
  • Student has submitted a letter from his/her adviser confirming that s/he student will be prepared to defend the thesis before the September deadline (check here for specific date). This letter should be submitted/emailed to the Administrative Director of the MA Program, no later than April 15.
  • Student has updated the expected date of graduation to September on Albert. (If student has not already done so in the Spring semester, student must also "apply for graduation").
  • Student has registered for Thesis Advisement during the Summer term.

Once a student has submitted the petition form, applied for graduation, registered for Thesis Advisement, and had his/her adviser confirm their plans with the MA Program, the student can make an appointment with the Administrative Director of the MA Program and pick up a Dean’s Exception Letter. Students must have a Dean's Exception Letter in hand in order to pick up graduation tickets and attire.

Candidates who will not complete their degree requirements by the September 2017 deadline set by Gallatin and the Office of the Registrar, may not petition to attend the May 2017 ceremonies. They will be invited to march in the May 2018 ceremonies.
